Jacob BustosWe live in the most amazing country! We have access to the best of the best. My focus is on Food. More specific, portion sizes! Food is a daily necessity and an everyday pleasure. Who doesn’t love food? We all love to eat! In fact, in most cultures, food means so many different things. Love, family, friendship, home and comfort.

It is unfortunate that in this day and age, we are dealing with a national epidemic. It is shocking to know that 1 in 3 of our youth ages 2-19 are overweight or obese.

Physical activity has decreased, somewhat due to an increase in technology. As of 2009, only 33% of teens had access to Physical Education classes at school. Obesity and weight gain can also be attributed to sugary drinks and portion sizes.

One fifth of teenagers today are consuming the equivalent of an additional meal each day just in sugary drinks. Our youth will pay a high price for this behavior. Diabetes is at an all time high, and more people are having heart attacks in their 30’s and 40’s.

I dream of a day where we can reduce portion sizes. I challenge restaurants, fast food, fast casual, full service, to take a good look at their kid’s menus.

Portion control must be a topic that is front and center. Our kids need it, and our country depends on it. I lost 160 pounds having a bariatric procedure. I am happy and healthy today, but if I can say or do anything to help someone so they can avoid weight gain, that is my mission and my purpose.
