How to keep your family connected during a hectic school year.
By Shirin Yadegar
Back to school schedules are tedious and exhausting. Driving two kids to two separate activities after school is nearly impossible, but somehow we manage. In the midst of all the chaos, we many times fail to connect with our children. Instead, we are rushing them to eat a snack and get changed into their dance, gymnastics or athletic wear in the back seat. We rush them to after school activities and tutors because they have begged and we have coerced them. So by the time everyone gets home, showers and completes homework there is either a meltdown or pure exhaustion. (more…)

After a second sabbatical year traveling all over Asia, my personal favorite place to stay is Thailand. George and I have spent the last two months in Lamai, Koh Samui, Thailand. We have enjoyed the restaurants, the beach and George plays in the band twice a week at Rock Island House.
I interviewed eight year-old Esteban from France and six year-old Angie from Thailand to find out the best things to do in Koh Samui from a kid’s perspective! A clear favorite was Coco Splash Waterpark, followed by sailing with Siam Pirates and visiting the waterfalls. Esteban’s dad, Florian, also said one of the best things about Lamai is just swimming in the water! (more…)

I traveled back in time to Vienna when Mozart composed his most popular music and listened to my cousin, Richard Danielpour’s brilliant compositions resonate throughout the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Sipping Viennese coffee in the cafe where Hitler frequented was surreal.
In Budapest I walked through the oldest synagogue in Europe and saw the shoes of the Jews who were killed and thrown into the river by the Germans. My husband and I couldn’t figure out how the Hungarian people just stood by and watched this inhumanity. (more…)
Beverly Hills stylist Karen Lazar shares her tips on how to organize your closet so you can shop more effectively.
Q: My closet is a mess. Where do I start?
A: I always start with a rolling rack and start pulling out the pieces I haven’t worn in a long time. I then try the pieces on one by one and decide if it fits. If it doesn’t fit I put it in a pile to give away, alter or sell if it’s a designer label that is worth selling. I then take out the pieces I know I wear and organize by category such as blouses, pants, skirts, tops and jackets. I put them back in the closet by category from light to dark or light weight to heavier weight.I put pants from narrow to wide within the color so I know if I’m in a hurry I can grab the right pant with the right shoe height.
If you don’t have a rolling rack you can lie the clothes on the bed and then transfer your piles in large garbage bags or shopping bags. (more…)
An exclusive interview with international designer Carrie Livingston.
Carrie Livingston shares her secrets on remodeling.
Question: My kids want a “grown up” tween room. Any suggestions for how I can give them what they want without spending a fortune?
Answer: When taking on a kids decorating project, allow your kids to be a part of the process. Kids are full of creativity and enthusiasm. Allowing them to be a part of the planning, shopping and work gives them the feeling that their opinion counts. Creating a budget and careful planning at the beginning with your kids, will give them a better understanding of what choices they can make during the process. Allowing them to be a part of creating a space that is a reflection of their own personal style and creativity and one that they can continue to evolve and grow into will give both the parent and child great pride.
